Fri, 26 September 2008 Anyone who knows me knows that there are a few shows that I love like no other. At the very top of that list is Lost and of course, Heroes. With that said, I am very excited that Heroes has finally returned after its 9 month hiatus. Ending prematurely due to the writers strike botched second season, I was left wanting so much more. I have got that and then some with what I consider to be the very triumphant return of the 3rd season of Heroes entitled "Villains" which aired the two first episodes this past Monday on NBC. If the name gives any indication, the show has taken a very sharp u-turn towards the darker side. The characters having dealt with the world shattering virus last season, are now faced with a series of new developments that might actually lead to a quite literal world shattering series of events. Without spoiling anything, we pick up right where the 11th episode of season 2 leaves off, and we do so with a bang. Right from the start the show is a blur of story and action. I think the show's creators realized that the second season, which suffered heavily from "second season syndrome", needed to make a lot of changes and make them quickly. This was both welcome and at the same time jarring to witness. The second season was often very slow moving, especially when in 1671 Japan following the misadventures of Hiro Nakamura. It just didn't have the same flow as the first season. On a whole it felt like exposition for something bigger, something to come after, instead of a story arc unto itself. Intentionally or not, it did lead perfectly into the new season's story arc. Season 2 saw the characters facing great weakness in the face of things they couldn't prevent, as well as the duplicitous side of those they meet. Now in season three we lose the unstoppable virus or giant explosion for something that hits much more close to home. Other people. And specifically other people who don't care about anyone but themselves, and are happiest while causing mayhem and destrucion. At the same time, the hard choices characters had to make in the series so far seems to have lead some of them astray and is essentially blurring the lines between good and bad. At any rate the first two episodes twisted and turned like rapids in a river leaving you wondering what exactly was around the next bend only to throw you off balance again. We saw characters make choices and take actions in an instant that they have plodded around for two seasons. They are finally learning who they are, what they are capable of, and how they are going to use that knowledge to selflessly better the world, or selfighly better themselves and their own agendas. At any rate, I cannot wait to see where the series goes from here. I think in many ways the show is still trying to find itself some firm ground to stand on. With the recent trend of "dark" plots in similar movies and tv in the genre light The Dark Knight, Heroes is testing the water and seeing if it can stay afloat. I am hoping the series can find its niche and quickly, as the ratings seem to still be gradually slipping, and it would be a shame to see a total premature end to such a creative and fun show. Fri, 26 September 2008 Ok, ok, ok. I know. No posts since the last post that said I was going to start posting. I guess I haven't the true blogger spirit within me. Meh. Anyway, I was just thinking to myself I might try to at least throw some posts up here on relevant topics even if I'm not fully producing the podcast regularly. It'll make me feel a little better about having done all the work to get this site going I guess. Ok? Off to the races... Category: general -- posted at: 2:21 PM Comments[0] |
